October events and closures

With October here, students are ready to start learning choreography using the steps they have been practicing in class thus far. This month, many of our classes will focus on Halloween-themed choreography, which will challenge students to build muscle memory, remember sequences from week to week, and consider their connection to musicality. Dancers will learn to synchronize their movement with the music's rhythm, tempo, and dynamics. We love introducing group choreography because it encourages teamwork and trust among students as they work toward a shared goal.

We have a number of events and closures coming up this month, please make note of the following:

Holiday closures:

The studio will be closed and no classes will be held on the following dates:

  • Monday 10/13 Indigenous People's Day

  • Friday 10/31 Halloween

Observation Week + come in costume

During the week of October 24-30, we invite all students to come to class dressed in their Halloween costume—or any costume that they want, as long as they are able to dance/move freely in it. These dates are also Observation Week at Steppin' Out. Families are invited to stay in the studio during class and watch what we've been working on. Many of our classes are working on Halloween-themed choreography all month and will be excited to perform these dances for you during Observation Week!

Bring a friend week

Save the date: November 3-8 is bring a friend week! Each dancer who is currently enrolled at Steppin' Out can invite one friend to join them in their regularly scheduled dance class this week. More details will be coming via email in a couple weeks, but for now you can mark your calendar and think about who you might want to invite!

Dance in the news: Celebrating Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

Visit the Main Branch of the SF Public Library sometime this fall to check out their latest photo exhibit: Celebrating Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. This collection is "an exploration of movement and memory through the lens of dance, with images that pay tribute to Alvin Ailey’s impact and artistry."

Movement of the month: wheelbarrow

To perform a wheelbarrow walk, you'll need a partner! One person stands in a plank or pushup position and the other person stands behind them and lifts their legs high off the ground. Both partners engage their core and keep their back straight. The partner whose hands are on the floor walks their hands forward alternating left and right. The person who's upright walks forward with their feet to match the pace of their partner. Don't forget to switch places so you each have a turn to try both roles!
